Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Hausa films, popularly known as Kannywood, have grown in prominence within the Nigerian film industry, particularly in Northern Nigeria, with a significant cultural impact on youths in the region. These films often reflect the social realities, challenges, and aspirations of the people, with themes ranging from family dynamics to societal issues such as drug abuse, poverty, and education. Drug abuse, especially among youths, has become a critical issue across Nigeria, with the youth being particularly vulnerable due to peer pressure, lack of awareness, and limited access to rehabilitation resources (Abubakar, 2023). In Zango Local Government Area, Katsina State, the rising trend of drug abuse among young people is an alarming concern that requires innovative approaches for awareness and intervention. Hausa films, with their widespread appeal and accessibility, can be a potent tool in addressing this issue. Given their ability to communicate with audiences in a relatable and engaging manner, Kannywood films have the potential to serve as an educational resource, influencing attitudes and behaviors toward drug abuse. This study aims to explore how Hausa films are addressing the issue of drug abuse among youths in Zango, assessing their effectiveness in spreading awareness, challenging negative behaviors, and fostering healthier lifestyles.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of drug abuse among youths in Zango Local Government Area, Katsina State, has become an urgent social issue, with significant implications for the health and well-being of young people. While several governmental and non-governmental efforts have been made to combat this menace, there remains a gap in the use of culturally appropriate mediums, such as Hausa films, to address this problem. Despite the growing influence of Kannywood in shaping public opinion and cultural values, there is limited research on the specific role these films play in tackling drug abuse among youths in this region. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the role of Hausa films in raising awareness about drug abuse, examining how these films depict the consequences of drug use and the potential for behavior change. The study also aims to understand how effective Kannywood films are in reaching their audience and contributing to the larger discourse on combating drug abuse among Nigerian youths.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Hausa films produced within the Kannywood industry and their impact on youths in Zango Local Government Area, Katsina State. The research is limited to the films’ representation of drug abuse and does not explore other social issues. A limitation of the study could be the potential bias in self-reported data from youths who consume Kannywood films, as well as the varying degrees of exposure to these films among different segments of the population.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Hausa Films (Kannywood): A film industry based in Northern Nigeria, producing films in the Hausa language, addressing various cultural and social themes.
Drug Abuse: The harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, such as narcotics, which affects the health, behavior, and well-being of individuals.
Youth: Individuals within the age group of 18-35 years, often identified as the primary target for social campaigns and interventions in society.
